The Dawn of a New Era for Made-in-Canada Roses

The Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA)’s New Plant Development Committee met in Vineland, Ontario on September 8, 2014. Members from across Canada had the chance to evaluate selections coming from the new rose breeding program at the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (VRIC) farm. The first made-in-Canada hardy rose breeding program was initiated in the 1990s with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC). In 2010, a new partnership between CNLA and VRIC was established to work on a hardy and disease resistant rose breeding program. The first group of rose selections has been distributed to a variety of locations across Canada for testing hardiness and black spot resistance. The introduction of a new rose on the market can take up to ten years.
